In January, Pam and Andrea spent six days at Agincourt Road Public School giving a 3-part workshop to the Grade 6 students on the ecological importance of pollinators and native plants. The presentations, which included visually stimulating Powerpoint slides, gave the students opportunities to ask questions and conduct simple research.
On the last day, they were given materials for winter sowing seeds. The containers were then placed in the raised beds in the quiet school’s courtyard area. This spring, MAPP members, community volunteers, and perhaps students, will prepare garden beds at the front of the school for planting their seedlings. When this is complete, and the students’ seeds have sprouted, half of their seedlings will be planted into these new garden beds. The other half of the plants will be taken home by the students to plant in their own gardens, thus spreading not only knowledge, but also plants! Andrea and Pam plan on expanding their project to include other grades, as well as leadership opportunities for this year’s Grade 6 students.
